アブダビと言えば先ずはここ。
真っ青な空の下佇む真っ白な総大理石のモスク。その巨大な姿と贅を極めた豪華な内装は、まさにアブダビを象徴するかのよう。
特に圧巻なのは礼拝堂。世界最大のハンドメイドのペルシャ絨毯が一面に敷かれ、天井にはこれまた巨大なスワロフスキー製シャンデリア。内壁全面に見事なモザイク画が描かれ、その美しさにため息が出るほど。アブダビ観光では外せない場所です。
一つ注意すべき点としては、入場の際に厳しい服装チェックがあり、男性はノースリーブ、短パン、ジーンズなどがNG、女性の場合は長袖、長ズボンであっても体のラインが強調されるものはダメで、頭もスカーフなどで覆わなければなりません。ですが、別室で男性用の長ズボンや女性用のアバヤ（伝統衣装）とスカーフを貸し出してくれますので、入れないということはありません。ただ、貸出衣装は中東の人のサイズ感なので、小さめの日本人にはずっと裾を持って見学しないといけないという不便な点もありますので、できれば規定内の格好での訪問をお勧めします。

自称7つ星ホテルとして世界中から注目を浴びたエミレーツ・パレス・ホテル。公式には5つ星ですが、その外観と内装から7つ星というのも納得のゴージャスさ。その名の通り宮殿のような建物やどこもかしこも黄金色の内装に圧倒されない人はいません。そんなわけで何度も映画の舞台に使用されています。このホテル内の「ル・カフェ」で名物の金箔カプチーノを注文して、優雅に富豪気分を味わうのも定番の楽しみ方です。ついでにホテルの目の前にそびえ立つエティハド・タワーズ74階の展望台へ上がってアブダビの街や周辺の島々を一望するのもお勧めです。

ルーヴル・アブダビは世界初のフランスルーヴル博物館の分館として2017年の開館しました。サディヤット島の西端に位置し、目の前にペルシャ湾が広がります。建物はフランス人建築家ジャン・ヌーベルによる設計で、その独創的かつ近代的なデザインも大変美しいと話題です。エメラルドグリーンの海に浮ぶかのように白壁の美術館が建ち、それを幾何学模様のドームが覆っているという、なんとも異世界な空間です。展示物は12のエリアに分かれており、内容はコンパクトですが、ユニバーサルミュージアムというコンセプトの下、世界各国の貴重な美術品が展示されています。一見の価値ありです。

現役の大統領官邸が一般公開されています。内閣が開かれたり各国の首脳が招待される国の顔ともいうべき場所ですから、当然普通の建物ではありません。シェイク・ザイードやパレスホテルに劣らぬほど豪華で贅沢な造りで、天井も高く広々としたホールは明るく、白、青、黄色のカラーで統一され、壁一面には繊細なアラベスク模様の装飾が施された伝統的なイスラム建築となっています。また、イスラムの学問の歴史を学べるコーナーや併設されている公立図書館も一緒に見学できます。図書館は誰でも会員登録することができ、アブダビ内からのデジタル図書館アクセスなどの利用も可能です。夜には音と光のショーも開催されています。

カスル・アル・ホスンは、アブダビ最古の建築物であり、アブダビの歴史と国政に常に関わってきた貴重な遺産です。18世紀後半に初めてこの建物の塔だけ建てられましたが、それ以前までこの地域は定住する風習がなく、皆テントなど簡易的な住居で生活していました。塔は見張り台として利用され、その後城塞として増築が進み、後に首長の住居となり、町の行政にも使われました。20世紀後半に改修が始まり現在は無料で公開しています。中にはアブダビの歴史が写真とともに紹介されており、紀元前年代の発掘品なども展示されています。当時のアブダビの人々の様子を想像しながらの見学は、リアルで貴重な体験となるはずです。
